LEED, Sustainability, Green, Energy Efficiency…. and Schools? TRIAD Architects is committed to helping school districts understand the principles of LEED, the advantages and disadvantages of going Green and helping them make informed decisions about how to meet their goals in these areas. What is LEED?- The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a nationally recognized system developed by the not for profit group the U.S. Green Building Council to provide third-party verification that a building project is environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy place to live and work. LEED Design Principles – Each LEED Rating System (New Construction & Major Renovations, Existing Buildings, Commercial Interiors, Core & Shell, Schools, Retail, Healthcare, Homes and Neighborhood Development) categorizes the LEED design principles into the categories listed below. LEED Certification- LEED registration is a process by which a building Owner completes a series of submittals to gain points in the different LEED design principle categories. Dependant on the number of points achieved the building can receive Certification, Silver Certification, Gold Certification or Platinum Certification. LEED Accredited Professionals- TRIAD Architects offers professionals who have completed the LEED Professional Accreditation exam. These individuals have been specifically trained in the implementation of LEED design principles and completing the LEED registration process. |

Why and when to go LEED?- TRIAD Architects will work with your district to counsel you on the advantages and disadvantages of adopting LEED principles in the design of persuing LEED registration and managing the LEED process. We recognize that each school district is distinct with a unique set of goals and expectations and we will help you identify and meet goals that are appropriate for you. Recent TRIAD LEED and Green Projects Westerville City Schools– TRIAD worked with Westerville City Schools to explore their options with seeking LEED for Existing Building Certification and to implement LEED Design Principles into their Capital Improvements Program that works to maintain their 23 existing school buildings. Cedar Bog Nature Preserve Education Center – This project is currently in the construction administration phase and it will be completed in December of 2008. It integrates several sustainable design principles such as a rain garden for storm water management, onsite waste water management through the use of a constructed wetland, waterless urinals, geothermal heating, a trombe wall, photovoltaic shingles, light monitoring and controls, and the use of green finishes. Glacier Ridge Metro Park Outdoor Classroom – This exterior classroom at Glacier Ridge Metro Park in Dublin, Ohio highlights a wind turbine and photovoltaic panel located in the park. Visitors are guided through hands-on, interactive exhibits that explain solar power and wind power technology to an exterior classroom that sets off the wind and solar technology. Ashford Park Mixed Use Development – This 90-acre mixed use development including residential, office and retail uses is currently in the design development phase. Sustainable practices being considered include water table re-Charge through bio-swales and permeable paving, water recovery systems – including grey water and rain water systems, wind energy – electric producing wind turbines, solar electric – PV panels and shingles, on-site geo-thermal exchange, green material selections, and green construction practices. The developers of this project have indicated that they will seek LEED Certification for this project and are even considering a seeking a Platinum level.
