With
approximately 200 pieces of artwork adorning hallways and classrooms,
Edward Lee McClain High School stood tall and proud in the small community
of Greenfield, Ohio. The school, built in 1915, was an icon of tradition
and respect. In a time of one-room schoolhouses, the addition of a vocational
school and elementary school made the campus a leader in education and
the pride of the town. Now renovations and additions have restored the
community's pride and renewed the campus' elegance and charm.
Through an $18 million building project, the campus of McClain High
School, Greenfield Middle School, and Greenfield Elementary School reclaimed
its role as an educational leader. The additions and renovations brought
these early 20th century buildings into the technology of the 21st century.
In keeping with the community's desires to preserve the campus' original
style, TRIAD added a second story to the 1956 elementary, creating consistency
with the high school and middle school. The elementary school is also
attached to the campus' shared structure through a connecting arcade.
By changing the mechanical system to a smaller, more efficient system,
a floor was constructed and the cafeteria was increased by three times
its current size. The space is a beautiful and functional addition to
the school with five sets of restored French doors that open to the
garden. An acoustic ceiling was added and florescent light fixtures
were replaced with pendant fixtures. The original garden, centered around
a new bronze multi-tiered fountain, is once again a focal point. The
fountain was a gift of TRIAD Architects.
Because the expansion was able to support existing and additional wiring,
Greenfield has become a forerunner with its extensive technology. Wires
and ductwork were hidden in the thick walls, existing chase way systems,
and the old central vacuum cleaning system. This has allowed the Greenfield
Campus to maintain integrity and charm while increasing technology.
