HOCKING HILLS
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Client: Logan-Hocking Local School District Total Area: 45,311 S.F. Total Cost: $5,659,650 Tucked away in a picturesque setting close to the Hocking Hills State Park, the new Hocking Hills Elementary School site is characterized by rolling hills and tree-lined streams. The building combines an assortment of brick and split-faced block along with clearstory windows and pitched roofs of various heights. Once inside, the main entrance provides a warm setting with a vaulted ceiling and clearstory lighting. The administrative offices are located adjacent to the entrance to provide convenient access to parents as well as to strengthen supervision and security. Grade levels are separated into two academic wings, with grades PreK-2 on one side of the building and grades 3-5 on the other. The media center is located in the core of the academic area and near the main entry to provide easy access to all grade levels. Adjacent to the media center is a central computer lab, which is designed to be compatible with the future addition of wireless technology. The community and district both expressed the desire to locate high volume areas away from classrooms. In response, the school's gymnasium, student dining area, and music suite are located in the rear of the building. This location also allows for community use during after school hours while the academic wings are secured. To make the elementary school more functional, the design includes an operable wall, which separates the dining area and the gymnasium. The wall will serve as a divider but can be opened to provide a large-volume space for school assemblies and events. The student dining area will include an elevated stage and a tiered ceiling to aid in the acoustics for school performances. |
