Jeffersonville Branch of the Carnegie Public Library of Washington Court House

Library Renovation/Addition
Jeffersonville, Ohio

Client: Carnegie Public Library of Washington Court House

Total Area: 3000 S.F.

Total Cost: $409,800

The new Jeffersonville Branch of the Carnegie Public Library of Washington Court House is located on Main Street in Jeffersonville next to the Village of Jeffersonville's municipal offices. The library's exterior consists of brick and siding with double hung windows resulting in a scale and appearance that comfortably coexists with the eclectic mix of 19th and 20th century architecture. The interior of the building features vaulted ceilings, finely crafted woodwork and plentiful natural light creating an open and inviting facility that the whole community uses.

The library was designed using TRIAD's Community Engagement Process. Before design began, Jeffersonville resident's including library staff attended a community meeting to express their expectations for their new library. Designs were then developed based on these expectations and presented back to the community. A community desire for the building to better accommodate the local elementary school (that does not have a library of its own) led to a spacious children's area adjacent to the centrally located circulation and staff help desk. The desire to be able to use the library's meeting room by community groups after library hours resulted in the separation of the circulation and reading areas from the meeting room and public restrooms. These and numerous other community wishes were successfully integrated into the design of the new library, which has resulted in feelings of pride and ownership by the community that is evident by use that has far exceeded the library's expectations.
