The Cedar Bog Nature Preserve Education Center is a multi-functional and versatile learning environment that is a physical manifestation (microcosm) of the bog and the bog experience expressing native materials in its construction. The environmentally responsible, low maintenance facility becomes a learning tool and acts as an observation post that connects the community and the bog. This fully accessible operations center creates a presence on the site and serves as a launch pad to the bog experience. The form of the energy conscious building expresses its solar orientation and earth sheltering, maximizing the views of the bog while remaining spatially and programmatically efficient. Outdoor constructed wetlands are linked with the buildings geo-thermal heating/cooling system, sub-surface irrigation and zero-discharge wastewater system, providing educational and public demonstration components in a highly sensitive and unique natural resource location.
