West Jefferson, Ohio

6,000 S.F.

Total Cost: $1,015,744

The renovations and additions to the Hurt/Battelle Memorial Library in West Jefferson, Ohio, transformed the existing simple building into a spacious and elegant new facility.

The building was doubled in size to address a number of overcrowded conditions. The increased space accommodates additional library stacks and several new reading rooms. The addition also allowed for a new break room/kitchen, larger workrooms, and individual staff offices. Because of the constant community use of both the small computer lab and community multipurpose room, the lab was increased to allow for 12 stations and an expandable community/conference room was created. The new community/conference room can be divided into two smaller meeting rooms. A separate computer area was also placed in the children's area for parent/child use.

The new design addressed function as well as the need for a unique appearance. Passing through the new exterior tower is a grand double-volume circulation space that is flanked by the barrel vaulted adult area and an intimate children's area. The adult area is punctuated by a reading area that incorporates a large south-facing window. Through the use of traditional brick, including a decorative water table, the building became a dominant feature in the small community. The entry tower, located at the center of the building, identifies the library as a key public building in the growing community.
